Moti Masjid is one of the most beautiful mosques of India built during the reign of emperor Shah Jahan. Situated in the premises of the Red Fort in Agra, the splendid architectural wonder was constructed between 1648 and 1654. The design and decoration of this mosque beautifully depicts the amazing taste of emperor. He was a lover of white marbles and this Masjid was built in pure white marble, hence the name Moti (meaning Pearl). The architectural design of the mosque resembles the Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow. The architectural significance of the mosque is that it is built on a land that inclines from east to the northern part of the Diwan-i-Am complex. The mosque here is lavishly built with light white marble facing reflecting the style of architecture during Shah Jahan. Located near beautiful sacred River Yamuna, tourists are captivated by the sparkling silvery appearance of the atmosphere around the monument. The structure comprises of three large domes. These are of very architecture significance for India. All of the domes are constructed of white marble in combination with red sandstone for basement. Towards the right rests Diwan-E-Aam. One of the most unique factor about this mosque is that the structure is different from other monuments and mosques in India. Unlike other mosques, the major podium of Moti Masjid contains four steps. Others have three steps. Men and women pray separately. The prayer halls are embellished with beautiful screens with marble worked screens. The entire monument is encircled by balconies on all the sides. Since the masjid shone like a pearl, it got the famous name of Moti Masjid. The place is near to the city center. It is well connected by rail, bus, and air.
